Onimusha Way of the Sword Launches September 25
More than 20 years after the last mainline entry, Capcom is finally bringing the samurai-slasher series back. Onimusha Way of the Sword launches on September 25, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, and a free playable demo is already available on PlayStation. Miyamoto Musashi takes the lead role this time, wielding the Oni Gauntlet in an early Edo period Kyoto overrun by monstrous Genma.
Drawing on Softonic, Capcom's official Onimusha site, and PlayStation Blog's State of Play recap, here's everything you need to know about the return of Onimusha before launch.
What Is Onimusha Way of the Sword?
Onimusha Way of the Sword is a third-person samurai action video game and the first brand-new mainline entry since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006. Producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei have framed the project as a proper flagship return rather than a nostalgia play. The story stars a fictionalised version of the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. Set during the early Edo period in Kyoto, Japan, the game follows Musashi as he stumbles into a war against the Genma, otherworldly demonic creatures who have taken over historic locations across the city. Familiar landmarks like Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Mount Oe feature prominently, and Sasaki Ganryu appears in the demo.
Is there any information about multiplayer or co-op modes in Onimusha Way of the Sword?
There is no information about multiplayer or co-op modes in Onimusha Way of the Sword. Capcom has confirmed the game is a purely single-player action-adventure experience. Producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei have designed it around Miyamoto Musashi's solo journey, with no online or local multiplayer at launch.
A Tale of Dark Fantasy in Feudal Japan
Capcom's pitch frames the new entry as a tale of dark fantasy set in feudal Japan twisted by supernatural forces. Edo-era Kyoto has been consumed by malevolent clouds of Malice, transforming streets and temples into nightmarish battlegrounds cloaked in mystery, danger and intrigue. It is a tale of a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet, the mystical artifact that grants its bearer the power to slay Genma from the underworld. Through bloodbaths of intense swordplay action, Musashi searches for his reason to fight, and Capcom teases what fate awaits at the end of his path.
Release Date and Platforms
Capcom confirmed the release date at Sony's June 2, 2026 State of Play, locking in September 25, 2026 for a simultaneous launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Nintendo Switch 2 is a notable omission from the current launch lineup.
When Does Onimusha Way of the Sword Launch?
Onimusha Way of the Sword launches on Friday, September 25, 2026. The game hits a crowded window with Marvel's Wolverine (September 15), Dune Awakening (September 22), and Silent Hill Townfall (September 24). Kadowaki has said the team is "not worried" about the competition, framing the Issen combat system as the game's distinguishing identity. Other publishers shifted releases like Valor Mortis and Lords of the Fallen II to avoid the traffic.
Oni Gauntlet
The Oni Gauntlet is the central mystical artifact and source of Musashi's supernatural power. As its bearer, Musashi channels Oni energy through his blade, absorbs Genma souls, and unleashes abilities no human swordsman could match. The gauntlet is inhabited by the Oni Lady, a supernatural ally who communicates from within. The premise echoes previous Onimusha games, where protagonists gained their edge over the underworld by binding themselves to Oni power, but the specific rules and abilities are all new.
Issen Combat System
Combat is built around parrying, deflecting, and the series' signature Issen critical attack, a one-strike takedown that rewards perfectly timed input. Ultimate slashing mechanics capture the impact of every swing, and blade-on-blade clashes create tactical depth around when to attack, defend, and unleash superhuman feats granted by Oni power. Dodging attacks fills the Reflex Dodge gauge on the bottom right, and once full, players unleash a powerful Reflex Combo. Other techniques include Deflect, Oni Armament, and absorbing souls from defeated Genma.
Musashi's Oni Powers
Beyond the sword, Musashi wields the power of the Oni, granting two abilities on top of the parry-focused core loop. Oni Strength breaks stalemates with brute force, shattering enemy defences and smashing environmental obstacles for exploration. Oni Agility clears paths with explosive speed and lets Musashi run across walls to reach new areas, adding verticality older Onimusha entries did not offer. Oni powers turn Musashi into a real threat to the colossal Genma bosses, including Shuten Doji at Mount Oe.
Demo
Capcom released a free playable demo on June 2, 2026 alongside the release-date announcement, currently exclusive to PS5. It runs 30 minutes of early story, dropping players into the Kiyomizu-dera Temple stage for a duel against arch-rival Sasaki Ganryu. Every core system is available to try, including Parry, Deflect, Issen, Oni Armament, and soul absorption. Demo progress does not carry over into the full game, but the save data unlocks a Charm called Kubi Akari when the full version launches.
Announcement History
Onimusha Way of the Sword was first revealed at The Game Awards in December 2024. A second trailer followed at Summer Game Fest the next year, and Kadowaki and Nihei sat for hands-on interviews at Gamescom. The June 2026 State of Play was the final beat, closing out with a demo drop and locked release date.
Where can I find official trailers or gameplay videos for Onimusha Way of the Sword?

Musashi Miyamoto and the Cast
The protagonist Musashi Miyamoto, more commonly Miyamoto Musashi in English, is a fictionalised take on Japan's most famous swordsman. The appearance of Miyamoto Musashi is modelled on the late Toshiro Mifune, iconic actor from Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, Rashomon, and Yojimbo. Series veterans will remember Musashi's cameo in Onimusha: Blade Warriors, the 2003 crossover fighter, but Way of the Sword is his first mainline lead. The cast expands with veteran swordsman Ono no Takamura and kabuki dancer Izumo no Okuni.
Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses
Three digital editions are on sale. Standard includes just the base game. Deluxe adds a Kit with extra Charms, an outfit, and appearance skins. Premium Deluxe layers on a Premium Kit with ally outfits, more skins, and the in-game digital soundtrack. Every pre-order unlocks the Lion Dog Charm buff and Sealed Curse Sword Appearance cosmetic. Deluxe and Premium Deluxe also earn an extra Charm and Sword Appearance.
Verdict Ahead of Launch
Everything Capcom has shown positions Onimusha Way of the Sword as a proper return to form. The Issen system is the identity the series has always had, the Musashi setting adds a historical hook, and Oni powers plus verticality suggest developers have absorbed two decades of action-game design. If it delivers September 25, this could be the samurai-slasher revival fans have waited for since the PS2 era.
