Phantom Blade Zero Reviews Praise Its Wuxia Combat
Phantom Blade Zero launches October 29, 2026 on PS5 and PC, and critics have called it one of the best action games of the year, with an 88 on Metacritic and a 90 on OpenCritic. Developed and published by the Chinese studio S-Game, the wuxia action RPG is praised for its fluid combat and bosses, though reviewers flag a predictable story, uneven balance, and demanding PC requirements. Here is what is confirmed about the release date, the reviews, and how it plays.
What Phantom Blade Zero Is and When It Launches
Phantom Blade Zero is built in Unreal Engine 5 by S-Game, a studio based in Beijing with an art team in Hong Kong. Players control Soul, an elite assassin for The Order, a secretive and powerful organization, who is framed for the murder of its patriarch. After a duel with his former blood brother Zuoshang, Soul is revived with a tainted heart that leaves him only 66 days to live, and he sets out across the mysterious Phantom World to restore his heart and unravel a conspiracy that threatens the martial world.
Per Wikipedia, the world is loosely based on Ming dynasty China and fuses wuxia with steampunk, cyberpunk, and horror in a style director Soulframe Liang calls kungfupunk. Official store copy describes the golden age of wuxia cinema colliding with punk fantasy, with cold steel, mechanical prosthetics, crumbling industrial ruins, and modern rock music, and the game blends traditional martial arts with those elements to move beyond traditional wuxia. Exploration promises mysteries like Memory Flowers, the Wulin, and the Lady of the Veil.
The series began with Rainblood: Town of Death, and S-Game announced the remake at a Rainblood anniversary concert in November 2016. Liang calls Phantom Blade Zero the spiritual rebirth of the original Rainblood, with a new story that requires no knowledge of earlier games and a full game's worth of content within itself. S-Game revealed it at the PlayStation Showcase on May 24, 2023, and a dedicated State of Play in August 2026 showed more of its gameplay and story.
The release date is October 29 on PS5 and PC, though Steam's page lists October 28. S-Game moved it from September 9 in June to give the team additional time to polish it, and Tencent's earlier partnership offered financial backing and additional support. Push Square reports S-Game has also said no generative AI was used in development.
What Editions and Price Are Available?
The Standard Edition costs $59.99 and the Digital Deluxe Edition $69.99 on PC and PS5, per Epic and Steam. The Deluxe Edition adds the Wulin Legend and Blood-Steel Form outfits, a digital artbook, and a digital soundtrack, and pre-orders of either edition include a Treasure Basin accessory and a Legacy outfit that can also be earned in game. Notebookcheck reports the PS5 install is over 130 GB, and Club386 says the PC version needs 145 GB installed and 300 GB free during the initial unlock process.
Review Scores and Critic Reception
OpenCritic lists a Top Critic Average of 90 across 47 reviews, with 96 percent of critics recommending the game, while Metacritic shows an 88 on both PS5 and PC. TheGamer notes that this outscores two of the year's biggest rivals, Onimusha: Way of the Sword at 85 and Nioh 3 at 86. Beebom reports there were no negative reviews on either aggregator at launch.
IGN, Push Square, and TheSixthAxis each scored it 9/10, and VGC gave it 4/5. TheGamer's Sam Woods gave it a 10/10, his first top marks in seven years, and Wccftech's Francesco De Meo also gave it a perfect 10/10, calling it a "masterpiece." One 9/10 review quoted on OpenCritic called it an "unbelievably smooth action game" with memorable boss fights, compelling combat, and limitless swagger. IGN's Travis Northup called it spectacular and occasionally gloriously ridiculous, and Kotaku's roundup adds that IGN found the arcade combat and difficulty curve exceptionally "well tuned."
What Are the Main Complaints?
The criticism centers on story, balance, and polish. Northup said the tale of betrayal and revenge "mostly plays it extremely safe," and Eurogamer, which scored it 60, praised the fluid, cinematic kung fu combat but said balance and quality issues dim its shine. Kotaku's roundup notes some reviewers found the game overly lenient in places, including multi-phase boss fights with checkpoints between phases, and Notebookcheck adds that an early leaked review noted repetitive combat.
How the Combat Works
Combat is the main draw. Soul carries two primary weapons, which are blades, and two secondary weapons called phantom edges, including cannons, lances, axes, and hammers. IGN's hands-on named unique Phantom Edges such as the Man-Cutter halberd and Flaming Mane. Per Wikipedia, a resource called sha-chi powers heavy attacks and blocks, and defense is a mix of blocking, parrying, and dodging.
Enemy attacks are color coded. Brutal moves drain sha-chi heavily if blocked, and killer moves cannot be blocked or parried, but a well-timed parry or dodge triggers a ghostep, which repositions Soul behind the enemy. Because the team avoided shared basic mechanics, each weapon plays differently, and transitions are built for a natural flow between actions so players can chain seamless combos.
A collective enemy artificial intelligence that follows formation logic lets groups of enemies act as one unit, so what looks like several enemies attacking at once may be a single move modeled across many of them. The action draws on traditional martial arts, with renowned martial arts choreographers including action director Kenji Tanigaki and Donnie Yen's stunt team, plus consultation with masters of traditional schools, and inspiration from classic Hong Kong martial arts films. Kotaku's roundup notes the FromSoftware influence in the bell checkpoints and multi-stage bosses, though Liang has said the game is neither a Soulslike nor a traditional action game.
What Difficulty Options Are Available?
Phantom Blade Zero offers four difficulty options, Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, Hellwalker, and 66 Days. Hellwalker makes enemy AI more adaptive, and 66 Days adds a counter that drops with each death and ends the run with permadeath if it reaches zero. A New Game Plus mode unlocks after the first playthrough, and the main story can end in one of eight endings depending on your side quests.
World, Music, and Presentation
PC Gamer reports that exploration is guided by eight authentic hand-painted Chinese ink wash maps. Actor Donnie Yen, who voices Mó Yuan and served as creative consultant, helped shape the fights, and Liang credits the assistance of Donnie Yen and his team for building the combat from the ground up around the authenticity of Chinese kung fu. Actress Zhang Jinzhi plays Mu Xiaokui, and Yucheng plays Soul. Composer Caisheng Bo built the score around traditional Chinese instruments, using the erhu to convey freedom and killing intent, and blended in electronic, rock, and hardcore house textures.
Has Any Official Gameplay Footage of Phantom Blade Zero Been Released?
Yes. Official gameplay footage of Phantom Blade Zero has been released through several trailers, including a Summer Game Fest gameplay trailer in 2024, an 11-minute trailer in August 2026, and a dedicated State of Play on August 18 covering gameplay and story.
Phantom Blade Zero PC Performance and Settings
Wccftech's Hassan Mujtaba benchmarked the game on an Intel Core i9-13900K with 32 GB of DDR5-7600 and found it very graphics intensive. The official minimum calls for an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1660 6 GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8 GB for 1080p at 30 FPS with upscaling, while the recommended tier is an RTX 3060 Ti or Radeon RX 6700 XT for 1440p at 60 FPS. The game runs on Unreal Engine 5.7.4 with a one-time shader compilation, supports TSR, DLSS, FSR, and XeSS, and offers frame generation up to 2x on AMD, 4x on Intel, and 6x on NVIDIA.
Ray tracing cuts performance 20 to 22 percent against native Ultra, and path tracing takes another 35 to 40 percent against ray tracing, roughly 50 percent in total.
What GPU Do You Need for 60 FPS?
At native 4K Ultra, only the RTX 5090 reaches 60 FPS in Wccftech's testing, at 63 FPS, while the RTX 4090 manages 51 and the RX 9070 XT 31. At 1440p, the RTX 5070 Ti hits 62 FPS and the RX 9070 XT 57, so most mainstream cards need lower settings or upscaling. Wccftech found a 5090 at 4K climbs from 63 FPS to 333 FPS with 6x multi frame generation.
What Comes Next
With a 20 to 30 hour main story, a New Game Plus mode, and eight endings, Phantom Blade Zero has plenty of replay value for those who connect with its combat. Reviews broadly agree the action is the highlight, and the main debate is whether its balance and polish match its ambition. S-Game's official website and its X and YouTube channels carry the latest news and updates.
